Meet Our Parent Dogs

Health-screening records are specific to each dog. Ask what documentation is available to review; screening cannot guarantee that a puppy will not develop an inherited condition. Every Royal Shih Tzu puppy comes from AKC-registered, health-tested parents who live as beloved family members in our home.

Why the Parents Matter

The single best predictor of what your Shih Tzu puppy will be like as an adult — its size, temperament, coat type, and health tendencies — is who its parents are. This is why any reputable breeder will be completely transparent about their breeding dogs and will actively encourage you to meet them.

A breeder who is evasive about their parent dogs, who refuses to share photos or registration papers, or who does not allow visits is a red flag. At Royal Shih Tzu Puppies, we are proud of every dog in our program and welcome any question about them.

Our parent dogs are not production units — they are our family. They sleep on our furniture, play with our children, and are spoiled with love every single day.

Our Breeding Dogs Live as Family

There is a significant difference between a breeder who keeps dogs in a kennel and one who raises them in the home. Our breeding dogs have never spent a night in a cage. They live exactly as your future puppy will live — on the sofa, in the bedroom, in the thick of family life.

This matters for several reasons:

  • →Dogs raised in homes pass their ease with domestic life on to their puppies through early imprinting.
  • →We know our dogs inside and out — their quirks, their favorite toys, what startles them and what doesn't. This knowledge makes us better at matching the right puppy to the right family.
  • →Home-raised breeding dogs are less stressed, which contributes directly to healthier pregnancies and more settled litters.
  • →You can visit and see for yourself exactly how our dogs are kept.

Health Clearances on Our Parent Dogs

Before any dog enters our breeding program, they pass a series of health evaluations relevant to the Shih Tzu breed. We do not breed dogs with genetic conditions that would be passed on to puppies — it is simply not something we are willing to do.

Evaluations include eye certifications (CAER), patellar evaluations, hip screening, and DNA health panels. Certificates are available for review by any prospective family — just ask.

For more detail on what we test and why, see our Breeding Standards page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I meet the parent dogs before buying a puppy?

Absolutely — we encourage it. We welcome visits by appointment at our home in McKinney, TX. Meeting the parents is one of the best ways to predict your puppy's adult temperament and size.

Why does it matter who the puppy's parents are?

Temperament and health are both strongly heritable. A puppy raised from calm, healthy, well-tempered parents is far more likely to grow into a calm, healthy, well-tempered dog. Pedigree matters.

Are your parent dogs AKC registered?

Yes. All our breeding dogs are fully AKC registered with verifiable pedigrees. We can provide registration documentation for both sire and dam for any litter.

How do you care for your breeding dogs?

Our breeding dogs live as full family members inside our home. They sleep in our beds, play in our yard, and are treated with the same love and attention as any pet. We do not keep our dogs in kennels or cages.

At what age do you retire your breeding females?

We retire our females by age 5 and place them in carefully selected companion homes. Responsible breeders limit the number of litters a female produces and prioritize her quality of life above breeding longevity.

Can I see photos of the parent dogs?

Yes — when you inquire about a specific puppy or litter, we will share photos and videos of both the sire and dam. Contact us to start the conversation.
