Shih Tzu Puppies for Sale in California

Bringing Royal Puppies to the Golden State

California is one of the most diverse, vibrant states in the nation, and its residents have a passionate love for companion animals. From the beachside neighborhoods of Santa Monica and Pacific Beach to the tech-driven suburbs of Palo Alto and Cupertino, from the agricultural heartland of the Central Valley to the artistic enclaves of San Francisco's Mission District — Californians across the state are discovering what Shih Tzu owners have known for centuries: there is no better companion dog.

At Royal Shih Tzu Puppies, we are based in McKinney, Texas, where we have been breeding exceptional Shih Tzus for over 15 years. Our puppies are raised in our home — in our living room, surrounded by family, sounds, and the kind of daily affection that produces confident, social, loving dogs. We are not a commercial kennel. We are a family of dedicated breeders who care deeply about the puppies we raise and the families they join.

Why Shih Tzus Thrive in California

California's lifestyle is wonderfully compatible with Shih Tzu ownership. In Los Angeles, many residents live in apartments and condominiums in neighborhoods like Silver Lake, West Hollywood, or Downtown LA. The Shih Tzu's compact size — typically 9 to 16 pounds — makes them ideal for apartment living. They don't require a backyard to be happy; a daily walk around the block and some indoor playtime satisfies their moderate exercise needs completely.

In San Diego, the Mediterranean climate is arguably the most pleasant in the country — mild winters, warm summers, and very little rain. Shih Tzus enjoy outdoor walks along the Embarcadero or through Balboa Park in San Diego's temperate weather. San Francisco's cooler, fog-influenced climate is also very comfortable for the breed, since Shih Tzus can be sensitive to extreme heat.

California is also a strongly dog-friendly state. Many restaurants, shops, and public spaces welcome dogs. Beaches like Huntington Dog Beach in Orange County and many parks throughout the state offer designated off-leash areas. Shih Tzus — friendly, non-aggressive, and sociable by nature — are naturals in these environments. They get along beautifully with other dogs, strangers, and children, which makes them ideal for California's social, outdoor-oriented culture.

For California families with children, the Shih Tzu's gentle temperament is a major asset. They are patient and playful with kids without being rough. For active young professionals in cities like Sacramento, San Jose, Oakland, or Fresno, a Shih Tzu provides companionship and emotional grounding without requiring the intensive exercise commitment of a larger, high-energy breed. And for retirees in communities across Southern California, the affectionate, low-key Shih Tzu is a devoted daily companion.

The Shih Tzu: A Breed Built for Companionship

The Shih Tzu is one of the world's oldest toy breeds, with origins in the imperial palaces of China dating back more than 1,000 years. Bred exclusively as a companion, the Shih Tzu's purpose has always been the same: to be loved and to love in return. Their name translates to "lion dog" in Mandarin, a tribute to their flowing, majestic coat — but their temperament is anything but fierce. They are gentle, warm, and endlessly devoted.

Shih Tzus weigh between 9 and 16 pounds fully grown and stand about 9–10.5 inches tall. Their double coat is long and luxurious, coming in a dazzling array of colors and patterns — gold, white, black, liver, brindle, parti-color, and combinations thereof. Their coat grows continuously rather than shedding heavily, making them a popular choice for those with mild pet sensitivities.

Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are confident, sociable, and sweet-natured. They are not shy or aggressive. They greet visitors warmly and get along with other pets easily. They are playful but not hyperactive, affectionate but not smothering. They thrive on human connection and are happiest when included in daily family activities — whether that means curling up on the couch during a movie, accompanying you to a dog-friendly café in Silver Lake, or going for a morning walk through San Francisco's Dolores Park.

With a lifespan of 10–16 years and a robust health record when properly bred, the Shih Tzu is a long-term companion and a genuinely rewarding one. Our 2-year health guarantee reflects our confidence in the health of every puppy we place.
