Why North Carolinians Love Shih Tzus

North Carolina's population has grown dramatically in recent years, fueled by a surge of families, young professionals, and retirees drawn to the state's quality of life, affordability, and natural beauty. This growing, diverse population has a deep appreciation for companion animals — and the Shih Tzu consistently ranks among the most beloved breeds statewide.

In Charlotte, the Queen City's blend of urban sophistication and Southern warmth is a natural match for the Shih Tzu. In neighborhoods like Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, South End, and NoDa, residents live in a mix of condos, townhomes, and craftsman bungalows — all perfect environments for a Shih Tzu. The city's extensive greenway system, Freedom Park, and dog-friendly restaurants along South End make Charlotte an exceptional place to have a small, sociable companion dog.

In the Research Triangle — Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill — the population skews young, educated, and active. Many Triangle residents live in apartments or smaller homes near downtown, and the Shih Tzu's compact size and moderate exercise requirements make them ideal for this demographic. Whether it's a morning walk along the American Tobacco Trail in Durham or an afternoon in Pullen Park in Raleigh, Shih Tzus fit seamlessly into the Research Triangle's active, community-oriented lifestyle.

In western North Carolina, communities like Asheville have a deep love of arts, nature, and craft culture. Asheville's dog-friendly breweries, parks, and River Arts District make it a wonderful place for a Shih Tzu to socialize. The cooler mountain climate of the Appalachians is actually very comfortable for the breed — Shih Tzus enjoy mild temperatures and do well in cooler weather with appropriate care.

Along the coastal regions — Wilmington, the Outer Banks, New Bern, and Beaufort — families enjoy a relaxed, community-focused lifestyle that suits the Shih Tzu's temperament perfectly. Coastal summers require heat management, but the mild springs, falls, and winters along the NC coast provide ample opportunity for outdoor activities with a Shih Tzu companion.

The Shih Tzu: Bred for a Life of Companionship

The Shih Tzu originated in ancient China, where they lived in imperial palaces and were treasured as sacred companion dogs. The name "Shih Tzu" means "lion dog" — a nod to their flowing, mane-like coat — but their disposition is gentle, warm, and deeply loyal. For over 1,000 years, they have been bred for one purpose: to be perfect companions.

Today's Shih Tzu is a small but sturdy dog, weighing 9–16 pounds and standing 9–10.5 inches at the shoulder. Their double coat is silky and grows continuously, coming in a gorgeous array of colors including gold, white, black, chocolate, brindle, parti-color, and more. They shed less than many breeds, but regular grooming is essential — either daily brushing or professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.

Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are outgoing and confident. They are not shy or fearful. They greet strangers with enthusiasm and warmth, making them wonderful family dogs and excellent companions for social households. They are patient and gentle with children, friendly with other pets, and adaptable to virtually any living environment. They are alert without being excessive barkers, playful without being destructive, and deeply affectionate without being anxious.

Shih Tzus are a long-lived breed — typically 10–16 years. When you bring a quality-bred Shih Tzu puppy into your North Carolina home, you're making an investment in many years of devoted, joyful companionship. Our 2-year health guarantee and 15+ years of breeding experience give you the confidence that this investment will last.
