Every puppy we raise is born and raised in our family home — not a kennel. They are socialized from birth, handled daily, and grow up hearing the sounds of a family household. This produces the calm, confident, affectionate temperament that Shih Tzus are celebrated for.

Shih Tzus and the Florida Lifestyle

Florida's lifestyle is diverse, but one thing unites Florida residents: a love of warmth, community, and family. The Shih Tzu — a breed that has been a devoted companion for over a thousand years — fits beautifully into this ethos. Whether you're in a beachside condo in Miami Beach, a suburban neighborhood in Orlando's Lake Nona, a retirement community in Sarasota or Naples, or a family home in Tampa's South Tampa, the Shih Tzu adapts effortlessly.

Florida has an enormous and cherished retirement community. In Sarasota, The Villages, Naples, Boca Raton, and countless other retirement-friendly communities, seniors discover that Shih Tzus make ideal companions. Their gentle, calm nature, moderate exercise requirements, and deep affection for their owners make them perfect for a quieter pace of life. They don't need a big backyard or vigorous hikes — a comfortable walk around the neighborhood is all they require, making them suited for any physical ability level.

For families with children in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Gainesville, or the Orlando suburbs, the Shih Tzu is a consistently excellent choice. They are patient and gentle with children, playful without being rough, and small enough that even a toddler isn't at risk of being knocked over. They're sociable by nature and tend to make friends with everyone they meet — human or canine.

One important note for Florida Shih Tzu owners: Florida's heat and humidity are genuine considerations. Because Shih Tzus have a shortened muzzle (brachycephalic), they are more sensitive to heat than other breeds. This means air conditioning is a must during Florida summers, morning and evening walks are best, and outdoor time should be monitored carefully during the peak heat of the day. With these reasonable precautions — which most Florida dog owners follow for any breed — Shih Tzus thrive beautifully in the Sunshine State.

About the Shih Tzu: A Royal Companion Breed

The Shih Tzu has one of the longest and most distinguished histories in the dog world. Originating in China over 1,000 years ago, these dogs were bred exclusively to be companions for the imperial court. They were so treasured that for centuries they were not allowed to leave China. Today, they are one of the most popular AKC-recognized breeds in the United States — and for very good reason.

Fully grown, Shih Tzus weigh 9–16 pounds and stand 9–10.5 inches tall. Their silky double coat comes in a remarkable variety of colors — gold and white, solid black, black and white, liver and white, chocolate, brindle, and many more. Despite the luxurious coat, Shih Tzus are actually a lower-shedding breed, making them suitable for many households that prefer cleaner floors. Their coat does require regular grooming — either brushing at home or professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.

In terms of personality, Shih Tzus are famously outgoing and friendly. They are not timid or shy. They are not aggressive. They love meeting new people and are typically great with children, seniors, and other pets. They are playful and curious, but not hyper or demanding. They are equally happy lounging with you on the sofa as they are trotting along beside you on a morning walk. They are social creatures that thrive on connection, inclusion, and affection.

With a lifespan of 10–16 years and strong health when properly bred, the Shih Tzu is a remarkably long-lived companion. Our 15+ years of careful breeding, combined with our 2-year health guarantee, gives Florida families confidence that their Shih Tzu will be with them for many years to come.
