Bringing Royal Shih Tzu Puppies to the Palmetto State

South Carolina is a state of gracious living. From the antebellum elegance of Charleston and the serene beauty of the Lowcountry marshes, to the vibrant urban energy of Greenville's Main Street and the steadfast character of Columbia, South Carolina's communities share a common thread: a deep appreciation for warmth, beauty, and the joy of a well-lived life. The Shih Tzu — one of history's most cherished companion breeds — embodies those same values.

Shih Tzus and the South Carolina Lifestyle

South Carolina's lifestyle varies beautifully from region to region, and the Shih Tzu adapts effortlessly to all of it.

In Charleston, the city's historic elegance and warm community spirit are a natural match for a breed that has always been associated with refinement and devotion. Walking a Shih Tzu through Charleston's South of Broad neighborhood, along Rainbow Row, or through the fragrant gardens of Hampton Park is an experience that locals treasure. Charleston's dog-friendly restaurants, boutiques, and green spaces make it an ideal environment for a small, sociable companion dog. The historic district's close-knit neighborhoods mean Shih Tzus are frequently out and about, meeting neighbors and becoming beloved local fixtures.

In Greenville, one of the South's fastest-growing cities, the vibrant Main Street corridor, Falls Park on the Reedy River, and the Swamp Rabbit Trail are all popular dog-friendly destinations. Greenville's booming population of young professionals, families, and entrepreneurs has embraced companion dog ownership enthusiastically — and the Shih Tzu's manageable size, loving temperament, and adaptability make them a natural choice for Greenville's mix of urban apartments and suburban neighborhoods.

In Columbia, the state capital and home of the University of South Carolina, a diverse mix of students, families, government workers, and retirees creates a rich, varied community. Congaree National Park and Sesquicentennial State Park offer beautiful outdoor spaces where leashed dogs are welcome. The Shih Tzu's social nature means they thrive in these community-oriented settings.

Along the Grand Strand (Myrtle Beach) and Hilton Head Island, resort communities have embraced dog-friendly living enthusiastically. Many beach communities welcome leashed dogs on the beach during certain hours, and the relaxed pace of coastal life suits the Shih Tzu's easygoing temperament beautifully.

South Carolina summers are hot and humid, particularly in the Lowcountry. Shih Tzus — as a brachycephalic breed — should be kept cool during peak heat. Air conditioning, morning and evening walks, and fresh cool water are essential summer care practices. The mild SC springs, falls, and winters provide ample outdoor time for year-round enjoyment.

The Shih Tzu: America's Beloved Imperial Companion

The Shih Tzu's story begins in ancient China, where they lived in imperial palaces as treasured companions to emperors and nobles. Bred exclusively for companionship — not for hunting, herding, or guarding — the Shih Tzu's entire genetic history is oriented toward one goal: being a devoted, loving, beautiful friend. Their name means "lion dog," a tribute to their magnificent flowing coat, but their personality is anything but fierce.

Shih Tzus weigh between 9 and 16 pounds fully grown, making them ideally sized for virtually any living situation — apartment, townhome, or house with a yard. Their long double coat comes in a stunning variety of colors and patterns. Despite the dramatic coat, Shih Tzus shed less than many other breeds, though regular grooming is necessary to keep the coat healthy and tangle-free.

In terms of temperament, few breeds are as consistently warm and outgoing as the Shih Tzu. They are confident and friendly, greeting strangers and guests with genuine enthusiasm. They are gentle with children and the elderly. They coexist peacefully with other dogs and cats. They are playful without being destructive or hyperactive. They are alert without being nuisance barkers. They are affectionate — deeply, genuinely affectionate — without being anxious or needy.

With a lifespan of 10–16 years, the Shih Tzu offers an extraordinary decade-plus of companionship. Every puppy we place in a South Carolina home represents the culmination of 15+ years of careful breeding, expert nutrition, and dedicated home-raising. Our 2-year health guarantee is our commitment that this relationship starts on the strongest possible foundation.
