Shih Tzu Puppies for Sale in Michigan

The Great Lakes State Deserves a Great Companion

Michigan is a state of extraordinary natural beauty — the Great Lakes shoreline, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, the forests of the Upper Peninsula, and the vibrant city culture of Detroit and Grand Rapids. It's also a state where people form deep bonds with their pets, and few breeds inspire that bond as naturally as the Shih Tzu.

At Royal Shih Tzu Puppies in McKinney, Texas, we have spent over 15 years raising AKC-registered Shih Tzus in our home — not a kennel, not a commercial facility, but our actual family living room. Our puppies are exposed to everyday home life from day one: the sounds of the television, the activity of family members coming and going, the gentle handling by children. This early, consistent socialization produces puppies that are calm, confident, and deeply attached to their families.

Why Michigan Families Choose Shih Tzus

Michigan families are diverse in their living situations, and Shih Tzus adapt beautifully to all of them. Young professionals in Detroit's Midtown or Corktown neighborhoods appreciate a compact, low-maintenance dog that thrives in an apartment. Families in the Ann Arbor or East Lansing suburbs love how Shih Tzus play enthusiastically with children while still being manageable in size. Retirees in Traverse City, Petoskey, or Holland find Shih Tzus to be the ideal companions for a slower pace of life — always ready for a leisurely walk, always happy to settle on the couch.

Shih Tzus are a non-sporting breed with modest exercise requirements. Two short daily walks and some indoor play adequately meet their physical needs, making them well-suited to Michigan's many months of cold, snowy, icy weather when extended outdoor activity isn't practical. They are content dogs — not demanding or anxious — and their emotional intelligence means they tune in closely to their owner's mood and energy.

The breed's low-shedding coat is another practical benefit in Michigan homes. Less hair on your furniture, floors, and clothing is always welcome, particularly in a state where you're often coming in from snowy or muddy conditions and tracking things through the house. Shih Tzus do require regular grooming (more on that below), but shedding is minimal compared to most other breeds.

AKC Registration & Our Breeding Standards

Every puppy we place in Michigan is fully AKC-registered. That means both parent dogs are registered purebred Shih Tzus with documented lineage, and your puppy's litter is registered as well. AKC registration gives you confidence that your puppy is a genuine purebred Shih Tzu — not a mixed breed or a puppy from an unknown background.

We select parent dogs carefully, prioritizing health, temperament, and conformance to the AKC Shih Tzu breed standard. We test our breeding dogs for common health conditions in the breed and maintain detailed health records. The puppies that result from these pairings consistently exhibit the hallmark Shih Tzu characteristics: a proud, rounded head, large expressive eyes, a flowing double coat, and the charming, arrogant-yet-affectionate personality that has made this breed beloved for centuries.

Every Michigan puppy receives before departure:

• Thorough veterinary examination and travel health certificate
• Age-appropriate DHPP vaccinations
• Multiple rounds of deworming
• Microchip implantation and registration
• AKC litter registration paperwork

Our 2-year health guarantee backs every puppy we place. We are a family breeder, not a commercial operation, and we remain available to Michigan families for the life of their dog.

Safe Delivery: Nanny-Escorted Flights to Michigan

Our position on cargo shipping is simple: we don't do it. A small puppy in a cargo hold — alone, in the dark, exposed to pressure and temperature variations, unable to receive comfort or water — is not something we will ever subject one of our puppies to. The flight nanny model we use ensures your puppy's travel experience is as stress-free as possible.

A travel date is not set until the selected puppy’s readiness, current route, schedule, cost, and handoff details are confirmed.

Flight-nanny delivery cost and available routes depend on the destination and current travel arrangements. Contact us for a current estimate and agreed airport handoff.

Michigan Shih Tzu Owner Tips

Cold Weather Care

Michigan's winters are long and can be brutally cold, especially in the Upper Peninsula and along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Shih Tzus' brachycephalic anatomy makes prolonged cold exposure risky — cold air can irritate their airways and cause breathing difficulty. For Grand Rapids or Detroit winters, invest in a quality dog coat, limit outdoor exposure on very cold days, and keep a towel by the door to dry off paws after snowy walks. Salt and ice-melt chemicals are toxic if licked — always wipe or rinse paws thoroughly.

Summer on the Lakes

Michigan summers are glorious, and many residents spend time at lake cabins, beach towns, and parks. Shih Tzus enjoy the outdoors in moderate temperatures, but they overheat easily. Keep them in the shade, provide fresh water constantly, and avoid the hottest part of the day. If you're boating on one of the Great Lakes, use a properly fitted canine life jacket — safety first.

Grooming Schedule

Plan for professional grooming every 6–8 weeks and home brush-outs several times a week. Michigan's seasons bring varying grooming challenges: mud and moisture in spring, pollen and allergens in summer, and salt residue in winter. Keeping your Shih Tzu in a shorter puppy cut makes all of these more manageable. Pay special attention to the areas behind the ears and under the armpits, where matting most commonly develops.
